These new metaballs are legit. Changing the scales of the metaball objects in real-time didn’t seem to drop FPS at all. I also added a material just to see if normals are getting calculated correctly, and surprise, surprise, they are.

I’m so stoked to convert these metaballs into VFX for my purposes. To all devs who open source their work, thank you. I was talking to a friend of mine about that (open sourcing), and he said this:

While he isn’t wrong, open sourcing also allows indie devs to steal your work! And that’s why I’ll always believe in open-source, because free code benefits anyone who knows how to use it. I haven’t stated it in here yet, but I plan to open-source this project once it’s developed to my satisfaction. I’d also like to release a paid tutorial series on recreating the project from scratch. To me, that strikes a fair balance between free and private knowledge. Anyone will be able to learn about the project by reading my code, but you’ll have to pay to see me read it to you!

I found a new metaballs repo and it seems pretty damn quick! This one uses the jobs system to get things done and runs at high FPS even though it doesn’t use the GPU! I haven’t looked deeply into the code yet but it definitely generates a mesh filter, which is what I need for my use case. I’ll look more into this soon. Fingers crossed!

If that GIF looks nicer than usual, it’s because I just started using ScreenToGif! It’s an open source project that even includes a GIF editor. Due to my recent struggles getting Gyazo to run (I needed to run those commands again today to fix it), I’ll be switching over. Gyazo, you served me well. Goodbye!

Not actual dev work but I did want to add this in here…
I finally fixed Gyazo video captures. Uninstalling Gyazo with Revo Uninstaller, rebooting and reinstalling it (multiple times) did not do anything to fix the ‘HRESULT: 0x8007007E’ error. But…with the help of ChatGPT, I typed the following commands into an admin terminal:
sfc /scannow
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
After which, I got working screen recordings again!
